Athlone House – Hampstead Heath

SHH Architecture

Historic Restoration

We were delighted to have recently completed this phenomenal house in Hampstead Heath, built originally nearly 150 years ago, it is not only beautiful but has an exciting history. For many years it served as a private residence, then an RAF intelligence school in 1942 before serving as a geriatric hospital in 1951 and remaining property of the NHS until 2003. The property sits in an elevated position surrounded by seven acres of landscaped grounds with impressive views across London.

Extraordinary Style

After undergoing an extensive two-year restoration programme, in keeping with the original style of build, the property boasts spectacular exterior features including Dutch gables, castellations on the tower and heraldic beasts. This large Victorian property is now a modern six-bedroom family home along with several outbuildings including a new pavilion, entertaining space, a gatehouse and cottage providing additional guest accommodation.
In keeping with the breath-taking property, great care has been taken with the landscaping, including restoration of the historic features and ponds, including the addition of a new walled garden.

Unique Work by EES

This project was an exciting new challenge for our production team, who enjoyed the new concepts within each of the designs. From grand feature ceilings to hand carved finishes, every element had a little extra flare. The variety of timbers used across the project was also interesting, giving every room it’s own identity within the vast space. Playing with textures, colours & shapes, the designer managed to create a never-seen-before modern interior in a way that compliments the historical building.
