EE Smith Contracts is continuing to grow from strength to strength through the 21st century with an ever increasing number of prestigious hotel, commercial and private interior new-built contracts and refits.

When Rodney and Nigel Richardson took over as joint managing directors in 1990, EE Smith Contract continued with the tradition of dynamic growth and investment in plant and processes designed to keep them at the leading edge of the industry sector.

This approach and project management style throughout the company has led to many clients remaining loyal for year upon year, with repeat business taking an ever increasing share of the company’s portfolio.

Originally founded by Edward Elijah Smith in 1897, the company began its dynamic growth in 1947 to the modern well equipped interior contractor that it has become today.

Founded by Edward Elijah Smith in 1897 and run from small shop on Canning Street, Leicester, the business prospered and moved to new premises in 1937.

This was when the story of the modern EE Smith starts, with the employment of Basil Richardson as a 14 year old apprentice, initially earning his money turning out pewter basins. When war broke out Basil served in the Royal Navy and on his return from military service in 1947, Basil returned to find Elijah in poor health and the business in decline.

At the age of 24, Basil found himself to be Managing Director, foreman and workforce, but the actual company appeared to be on its deathbed.

However, due to Basil’s dynamic management the company saw a turnaround in fortunes and it was not long before in began to expand, in the process relocating to Waterloo Street, then Byron Street and finally to its current premises on Morris Road in 1966.

This was the year that the company changed its name from EE Smith Bar Fitters to EE Smith Contracts, reflecting the company’s newfound versatile abilities.
